Substitute mass and volume

ρ = m/V = 1 kg ÷ 1 L. Because 1 L is exactly 0.001 m³, the coherent SI calculation is 1 kg ÷ 0.001 m³ = 1000 kg/m³.

Convert both parts of the unit

The same pair is 1000 g ÷ 1000 cm³ = 1 g/cm³. Since 1 cm³ equals 1 mL exactly, the result is also 1 g/mL and 1 kg/L.

Do not infer a substance

A numerical density near a reference value is not proof of composition, purity, temperature, pressure, porosity, or measurement quality. This example verifies arithmetic only.
